This woman is beyond talented and her work clearly reflects that. The obsessive detail and most importantly, the heart she pours into each piece, is breathtaking. She is telling many stories for those Katrina victims with no voices through this series of her work. Thanks Ms. Schwerd!

Thanks for the clarification Mike -

I wasn’t suggesting that the hair extensions or ‘barbershop culture’ was insignifcant, (as you duly pointed out I am an outsider and as such wouldn’t make such claims.)

Rather, I was asking a question, not declaring insignificance – Trying to broaden my own cultural understanding.

As an outsider, it can be easy to see any social ritual as insignificant. However, it is a mistake to reduce any cultural happening to a lowest common denominator… the barbershop culture that brings black Americans together to share time and stories is not insignificant. its empowering and culturally binding… its important.
