I witnessed at least a handful of passerby pause in front of the glass-front façade of the Jones Center in downtown Austin, Texas. They shuffled through pockets and bags to find their iPhones, quizzically documenting the two unusual objects on view. How much contemporary art stops people dead in their tracks, not to scoff and mutter “well, I could do that,” but rather to ponder[.....]

Anne Lindberg, "parallel 34," 2012. Graphite and colored pencil on cotton mat board. 104 x 58 inches. Courtesy the artist and Carrie Secrist Gallery, Chicago.

Her large-scale graphite drawings also on view in the gallery invited[.....]

One man’s rabbit is another man’s…

maurizio-cattelan-2969_1

On my first interview for graduate school, I unerringly identified each slide shown to me: Warhol, Matisse, Pollock, Smithson. I left confident for my next interview the following day. I waltzed into the building and calmly road up to the eighth floor.  There, I was completely caught off guard. Instead of Rauschenberg, Duchamp or Hirst, I was presented with a photograph of a man clad[.....]
