Cities are filled with innumerable details and a foreign land can be barrage of data. In Barcelona, on a walk, I drift from details of leafy building ornamentation to blank walls of flaking stucco, submerged in texture of all kinds. Man’s signs are everywhere, waiting to be decoded. Though I know nothing of graffiti, I am captivated by the drawing, the view of a flat[.....]

Located in Barcelona, Paradigmas is a gallery owned by Brazilian artists, and husband and wife team, Chico Amaral and Angélica Padovani. Their goal is to create a dialogue between Latin American and European artists, displaying paired works from both continents. Ilana Lichtenstein and Levan Tsulukidze were brought together for their last exhibition Casualmente Fotographia (Coincidentally Photography) by curator Gloria Fernández. Walking in Barcelona’s Espai B Galeria, Rithika Merchant‘s playful yet precise lines are immediately captivating. She depicts creatures that are humanoid in flat and floating world. Her repetitious line is used to build up pattern and fill in form rather than rendering them in space. Her large drawings are made on sheets of paper set in a grid or geometric design that symmetrically break apart[.....]

Each work in Martina Sauter‘s Shapely Shadows and a New Apartment, currently on view at Ambach and Rice, is made from two images–a still image from a pixelated video or film and a real space documented with distinct clarity.  The two parts are contrasting but complimentary, differing in texture and distinctness, but made to be one thing, often a fractured space or situation in flux. [.....]

A Shallow Wade is the title of a new exhibition that shows Americana distilled through an outsider’s perspective, that of Rotterdam artist Ron van der Ende.  Through his process of assembling large wall-hung collages of wood, he has salvaged doors, furniture, and other building fragments and deconstructed them, leaving worn paint in tact on skinned timber. These parts are collected and cut to fit into[.....]

SunTek Chung creates images of identity forged from concepts about culture and technology. Like all of his photographs, SunTek makes a real space for us to examine. He challenges the integrity and meaning of artifacts that are marginalized by their own popularity.
