As part of the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, approaches to translate the subjective experience into the artistic process were explored in In the Shadow of the Hand and Back to the Things Themselves. Questions were raised on the nuances and distinctions between notions of the subjective, personal and self-indulgent. Back to the Things Themselves, on show at The Briggait, presents artworks by Lesley Punton (LP) and Judy Spark (JS) who both explore possibilities and limits of translating one’s lived experience of the environment, and the potential for connections between a subjective experience with universal ways of knowing the world. A solo exhibition of works by Anna Barriball (1972, Plymouth) from the past decade is on show at The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh till 9 April 2012. The exhibition presents selected works  developed from a practice centered on repeated engagements with and between the languages of drawing and sculpture. T Rooms, an exhibition by Matthew Darbyshire is on show at Tramway, Glasgow and runs till 11 March 2012. In previous exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2008) and Herald St, London (2010), Darbyshire has created works critiquing homogenization and non-specificity in design and architecture, provoking questions on the strategies and value of urban regeneration. An exhibition of two adjoining shows by Slavs and Tatars and Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan is on at Kiosk, Ghent till 22 January 2012, featuring works that deal with interpretations and associations surrounding historically significant events. Friendship of Nations: Polish-Shi’ite Showbiz by Slavs and Tatars presents a re-imagination of an Iranian Polish Solidarity. Even to an eye unfamiliar with Iranian and Polish[.....]

Startle Reaction, an exhibition of works by Torsten Lauschmann is on view at Dundee Contemporary Arts till 8 January 2012. Skipping Over Damaged Areas is a compilation of movie titles, sequenced to form a new narrative. It is screened in the first gallery with Misshapen Pearl, a film that assembles street scenes and television footage, with Lauschmann’s voiceover reflecting on the streetlamp as a manifestation[.....]
