One might be tempted to call Lisa Tan’s exhibition at Arthouse in Austin poetic. But what would this mean? It is spare, filled with layered and complex allusions, much like a poem. Sometimes we come upon an exhibition that reminds us that there are intersections between different kinds of collections. One might think that the worlds of paleontology, mineralogy and art are separate but a recent exhibition of works by the Dutch artist Ruth Van Beek at Okay Mountain Gallery in Austin shows us otherwise. This is Not a Photo Show was organized by the artist Kimberly Aubuchon for Blue Star Contemporary Art and Unit B Gallery in San Antonio. The title makes reference to Rene Magritte’s famous painting cum philosophical conundrum, This is Not a Pipe.
